Varsity field hockey is on a hot streak and has won 13 of their 15 games played this season. The team is putting together an impressive campaign thus far and is looking to keep it going.
A 4-3 win against Pinkerton during Mack Plaque, proved that the team has what it takes to win on a big stage. One of the team’s goalies, junior Molly Tharrington, has a lot of praise to say about the team for their work ethic.
“I think what’s really important is all the hard work that the girls are putting in,” Tharrington said. “There’s never one person who’s doing more than everybody else.”
The effort that the team has put in together has not only helped them skill-wise, it has also helped them grow closer.
“With all the time that we spend together, we’ve learned to adapt to each other’s strengths and weaknesses and just bond,” Tharrington said.
The team rightfully carries confidence with them when it comes to their success. Along with this success, however, comes teams who want to knock them down. Tharrington knows that being on top makes them public enemy number one, but she and her teammates will not let that stop them.
“Other teams come out wanting to take us off that pedestal, and I think that’s our primary motivating factor [to keep winning],” Tharrington said. “There is no doubt in my mind and in the girls’ minds that we will have confidence going forward. We are a good team.”
Coach Nichole Treadway also has high expectations for her team heading into the back end of the season.
“We want to make it to at least the final four,” Treadway said, “That’s been our consistent driving force.”
In order to make this goal a reality, Treadway and the team prepared a lot over the summer to help them start the season off strong.
“You’ve got to put in work before the season begins,” Treadway said, “because when the season starts, [it’s] game, game, game, game, game”.
She also feels that the team is “still not viewed as a powerhouse” despite the strong start to the season.
“I think we’re still considered the underdog,” Treadway said, “but we like being underestimated. We are going out there and winning every game with a fight. With all of that, combined with going into the playoffs, it’s a great place to be.”
The field hockey team’s success is evident as they head towards the end of the season. As the year progresses, expect the Lancer field hockey team to continue their reign of dominance.
