The Londonderry Utilities Committee invites students to use their voices to advocate for change within the town. A new subcommittee will provide students with hands-on experience in shaping the community by having a direct voice in Londonderry’s town water system.
On Jan. 23, Assistant Principal and Extended Learning Opportunity (ELO) Coordinator Katie Sullivan invited Londonderry town water committee alternates Joy Muller and Ray Breslin to a meeting with science teacher and Department Head of Science Daniel Grant, science teacher Sebastian Vollmar and social studies teacher Suzanne Johnson to discuss how the new subcommittee will be run.
Students who join the subcommittee will have the opportunity to sample and test the school’s water and learn how Londonderry makes decisions regarding town utilities, like public water plants.
During the meeting, the group discussed how this new delegation will be strictly based on student input, as students will have the opportunity to vote on committee discussions.
Grant has begun to recruit students who he thinks would be well-suited for the committee. Although this group is expected to start small, it is open to all students. Anyone interested is encouraged to reach out.
The first student-led utilities committee meeting was Feb. 3 at 7 p.m. at the Town Hall. This first meeting’s attendance was not required for students to become a member, as the adults who oversee the subcommittee acknowledged that it was short notice.
Students are encouraged to contact Sullivan if they have interest in joining the committee, even if they are unable to attend the first meeting. More information to come in regards to water regulation in the town and district.
