Due to the Londonderry Workout Club’s pool heater breaking, the temperature of the water drastically dropped over the past few weeks, preventing the swim team from having practice at their normal time and location.
This inconvenience led to Coach Chrystena Ewen and Assistant Coach Noelle Bristol reaching out to other Workout Club organizations to find open pools for practice until the matter was resolved.
The highest temperature that the Londonderry Workout Club’s pool reached in the past three weeks before it was fixed was 71 degrees Fahrenheit. According to American Red Cross athletic swimmers should only be swimming in a pool that is between 78 to 82 degrees.
As of now, the swim team is back at the Londonderry Workout Club due to the conditions being back to normal.
The swim team conducted a morning practice at 6:30 a.m. on Nov. 26 at the Salem location in preparation for their first intrasquad meet on Dec. 5. Practice was followed by a team bonding breakfast at 9 a.m, to ensure good chemistry right off the bat.
According to Swimming World, an intrasquad swim meet is a competition where swimmers from the same team compete against each other, often used as a practice for newer swimmers and as a fun event for the whole team
Junior Mia Robinson, along with the rest of the team, has faced struggles while navigating around this inconvenience. According to Robinson, with all their upcoming meets, “it is difficult to miss some of the first few days of training.”
“I think especially for the newer swimmers, they are missing a vital part of learning to swim because they just started out,” Robinson said. “I know we will still be able to be successful this season.”
